Cinnamon powder hair mask is a natural hair growth stimulator. Due to its nutrients cinnamon helps restore and animate even the most brittle and dull hair. Also, it makes them grow much faster.
Cinnamon is used in the cooking, but the range of its application is not limited to it. This fragrant spice can be effectively applied in hair care. The unique spicy powder contains antioxidants, vitamins and other components which can help improve the condition of the scalp. In addition, it restores damaged hair structure, strengthens them, gives them a natural shine and stimulate hair growth.
Cinnamon hair treatment doesn’t demand much time and effort. You need to use just simple ingredients leaving you a wonderful feeling of pampered with lustrous strands.
Cinnamon Benefits for Hair
- Choline – moisturizes the scalp
- Vitamin PP – returns natural shine to hair
- Vitamin K – a beneficial effect on the scalp, strengthens blood vessels
- Vitamin E – regenerates skin cells
- Beta-carotene – prevents hair loss
- Vitamin A – helps to restore split ends

Be careful! Cinnamon, when applied topically, may cause serious skin irritation. Before you decide using cinnamon for cosmetic purposes better test a little of the mixture on your arm. The absence of inflammation and serious itching means you can apply cinnamon. If you are not sure whether you have an allergy or not – consult your doctor for details.
What to Choose: Cassia Cinnamon vs. Ceylon Cinnamon
For many of you, just like for me, it was a big surprise to know that cinnamon can be of different type. Ceylon cinnamon originates from Sri Lanka and Madagascar whereas cassia (or Chinese) cinnamon comes from Indonesia and China. Ceylon cinnamon is more expensive. Sometimes a customer is confused at the supermarket while buying natural cinnamon but getting cassia cinnamon instead which possesses fewer benefits.
Both of cinnamon types contain a substance called coumarin. It is toxic, a fragrant chemical compound with huge side effects for health. The only significant difference is that mentioned compound prevails in cinnamon cassia. And this is a key point. Since coumarin may cause liver failure if taken internally. It tends to provoke serious skin allergy and headache while topical application. It becomes obvious that cinnamon cassia should be avoided in hair treatment.
Cinnamon Mask for Growing Hair. Is It a Myth?
Everyone should understand that some of the natural remedies are not supported by solid scientific evidence. The same thing works if speaking of benefits of cinnamon for hair. Due to the experience accumulated by actual usage, cinnamon is believed to increase blood circulation and provide hair roots with necessary nutrients. What is more interesting: the result of applying cinnamon on hair is compared with such of Minoxidil (well-known medication prescribed usually for alopecia or baldness).
One of the reasons for hair loss is a microbial activity or fungal infection. According to chemical characteristics, cinnamon includes compounds such as eugenol and cinnamaldehyde. They possess anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. So, from this point cinnamon may treat such widespread scalp problem as dandruff.
As you see, hair masks with cinnamon powder or cinnamon essential oil have the most positive effect on the scalp and the hair condition. Hair treatment with cinnamon nourishes and moisturizes scalp, prevents hair loss, reduces the appearance of split ends, soothes the scalp and removes dandruff. But due to its natural abilities to enhance blood circulation, cinnamon accelerates hair growth, gives them a natural shine and luster and improves elasticity. High antioxidant properties of aromatic herb protect hair from the negative influence of external conditions (stress, ultraviolet light, low temperature, etc.). A pleasant aroma of cinnamon gives only positive emotions from the procedure – then it is so tempting to try.
Hair masks with cinnamon are said to be recommended for the weak, dull, thin and brittle hair. But according to my own impressions it will be suitable for any hair type, even for those who have oily hair type.
Cinnamon Hair Mask: How to Make & Use
- Choose a recipe and prepare ingredients. Take a bowl and put them into it. If you use oils in the recipe – warm them to a lukewarm temperature. Don’t make oils too hot because you can damage hair or burn the scalp.
- Mix ingredients in the bowl to get a deep brown blend. You can warm the hair solution in the microwave or put the bowl into a big pot of hot water to gently warm.
- Be careful using an egg in the blend. For dry hair type it is better to apply egg yolk. If you have oily hair, you can use egg white. While washing off the mask, make sure the water is not hot. Otherwise, you will have boiled egg parts in hair which are hard to remove.
- Before you apply a mask with cinnamon on hair it is necessary to go through an allergy test. It is enough to put a small amount of the mixture on the wrist or elbow bend. If discomfort like a strong and unbearable burning appears – wash off cinnamon mask immediately and don’t apply it on the scalp. Avoid contact of the cinnamon mask with mucous membranes of eyes and skin. If it happened, rinse immediately with plenty of warm water.
- To apply homemade mask use hair dye brush. Or you can dip your fingers into the liquid and massage it into the scalp. Continue the procedure until the scalp is covered with the blend completely.
- Spread the remaining mixture on the hair length. Duration of application depends on which ingredients were used. If you prepare the homemade mask with irritating compounds such as cayenne pepper tincture, onion juice, clove powder, cinnamon essential oil, don’t leave the mask on the scalp and hair longer than 30 minutes. In some cases, it is possible to prolong the period if you don’t feel any uncomfortable feeling.
- The cinnamon hair mask is not recommended for girls with blonde hair. Powder may leave unwanted yellow tint in fair hair.

Cinnamon Hair Treatment Reviews

I’ve been using homemade cinnamon mask on my hair for years and can honestly say that it is magic! My hair is instantly smoother, softer and my hair is no longer oily. I prefer to make the mask in the simple way: mix cinnamon powder with honey and water. I apply this blend twice a week. My hair is incredibly soft and shiny afterwards. And it really helps with the scalp too.

I’ve applied 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon honey, and left it on for an hour. I did this twice in one week since my hair cuticles are terribly frayed & don’t lie flat. The second application is when I noticed a difference. My hair was smooth and looked much better. However, both times I’ve used it my hair was not conditioned at all afterwards. But I want to add that it wasn’t so easy to comb, that’ why it is necessary to add some conditioner on hair. The cinnamon scent in hair is awesome!

I have very thin hair and it has never grown past mid boob before. But I wanted to have very long hair all the time. I took this recipe and made it my own. I use 3 egg yolks and enough olive oil mixed with cinnamon powder to saturate my hair. I don’t use water because it is too runny and I don’t like the idea of diluting this. I put it on dry hair once a week for 20-25 minutes then shampoo and lightly condition. I’ve been doing this weekly for about two months. Since I started, my hair is much softer and shinier. I have seen my hairdresser and she didn’t even have to trim my hair. And it’s grown about 4 inches! I thought my hair would never grow but my routine has helped immensely!

I do cinnamon treatment for several weeks following the recipe: cinnamon powder + kefir + lemon juice. Leave the blend on hair for 30 minutes. I washed my hair then applied the conditioner. After rinsing it out my hair was super dry and hard to manage or even brush. So, I put washed it with shampoo again and even after all that it was so hard to brush and detangle. I wasn’t impressed with the recipe at all.

My hair is not only shiny and soft, but the split ends are nearly invisible. I did change it up a little, I doubled a number of ingredients in cinnamon hair recipe because I’ve got so much hair. I try to apply homemade mask regularly, once a week and leave it on for 20 minutes. I like the cinnamon smell in my hair! My hair is shiny and soft after the first application. I will definitely continue using this recipe. I am pleased with the results! And seems, my hair grows much faster!
Dardana Nada, 31
To be honest, this cinnamon mix completely wrecked my hair. I used cinnamon powder in combination with honey and olive oil. I planned to grow my hair longer and healthier. After drying my hair it was clear that it just wasn’t gonna work. It made my hair dry, frizzy and thick. Usually, when I take a shower and then blow dry my hair it turns out perfectly smooth and soft. My hair also smells awful. Not going to use this natural remedy again and I don’t recommend anyone else doing this either.

I have been using a cinnamon mask in my hair for three weeks now. My results are pretty good. I did notice on my third treatment that my hair was softer than when I first tried cinnamon in my hair, so I guess it is really working. I noticed new hair regrowth and I feel happy about it. Since I cut my hair shorter I plan to grow it longer and longer. I apply cinnamon mix twice a week. I don’t use any hair dryer. I like the effect, my hair is glossy and soft!
Bláthnat Caroline, 23
I tried using a cinnamon mask for two weeks and I’m very pleased with the results. I applied the cinnamon mix to my hair and massaged them into my scalp and left on for 15 minutes. I rinsed the mixture out in lukewarm water and then I washed my hair with herbal infusion (I like nettle because I have dark hair). My hair felt thicker, silky and very moisturised. During my research many articles state that you won’t see results until you apply the cinnamon mask for a month. But I noticed the benefits immediately and am very pleased. My dry hair still feels very silky and moisturised!
Paulina Deniece, 35
I have used a homemade cinnamon mask with great success, personally. I have used it with argan oil and it keeps my hair frizz free for days. I have tried banana, but it didn’t make a huge difference. I don’t think the cinnamon mask is suitable for all hair type. Everyone’s different and I suggest trying these DIY hair treatments at least once to see if it works for you. I have short hair. Now it’s been 3 months already since I started using cinnamon for hair. I noticed my hair grows faster! I can see it clearly on hair roots because I’ve dyed my hair. I like it!
Birgitta Vanja, 40
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I like this hair mask with cinnamon. Not only does it have a lovely smell, it also has honey in it which I’ve notice makes my hair shine. Usually, my hair is dull because I dye it twice a month sometimes. I use this homemade mask once a week and it works wonders on my hair! It leaves my hair soft with a very sweet smell that lingers but not too strong and no frizz. I would recommend cinnamon mask to to others. It provides both a strengthening and conditioning effect especially if you have dry hair!

I’ve been using cinnamon with egg, honey and olive oil twice a week for two months now and i will not continue doing it if it doesnt give me the result i wanted.I was bothered by hair loss everytime i shower and brush my hair,i would sometimes count the strands on the floor and it exceeded way to many! But after patiently doing this natural treatment, the result is wonderfully satisfying! No more hairfall for me! Yeeyy!
I’m glad to hear you’ve got wonderful results! Natural hair treatments can really give a stunning effect.
I just tried the Cinnamon & Egg White Hair mask (without the essential oil) and I’m in LOVE! I’ve been doing a lot of homemade treatments lately – ACV rinse, egg yolk + avocado, egg yolk + coconut oil, name it! – and they’ve all been wonderful to my hair. I also use a natural hair shampoo. My hair is growing crazily fast; will continue to use cinnamon hair treatments.
Hi ViVi, how many days a week that you do hair mask?
I just use Mayo and cinnamon every Wed. and Sun. I have permed A.A. hair. I have to get a touch up perm for my new growth every 6weeks because it makes my hair grow so fast. My hair is very shiny and it doesn’t shed like it did before I started using the mask. Plus it stops my dandruff.
Is it just cinnamon and mayo you use for your hair? And how long do u keep the mask on ur hair?
Please help. My hair has always been my pride and joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don’t know what to do. my hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair?
This is a great article! The various recipes with cinnamon are really useful.
One point about cinnamon. Just as you pointed out that cassia and Ceylonese cinnamon are not the same, you also need to make a distinction between the two types of cinnamon oil obtained from the Ceylonese cinnamon tree – cinnamon LEAF oil and cinnamon BARK oil since the constituents making up their essential oils are fairly different. C. bark oil’s largest constituent is cinnamaldehyde (63% to 77%) followed by eugenol (2 to 13%) while C. leaf oil’s largest constituent is eugenol (69% to 87%) followed by eugenol acetate (1% to 8%, so you really need to know which cinnamon oil you want. Information taken from Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand & Young.
I am NOT an expert but highly recommend the Tisserand & Young book along with the books written by Jessica Rhind, which are great for all levels.
