And all these lead to gorgeous mane which is so important for any girl and woman.

As folk remedy mustard plays significant role in many beauty procedures. This nature’s gift helps stimulate hair follicles and boosts blood circulation in your scalp, thus, accelerating hair growth. Mustard helps remove grease from strands. It effectively unclog scalp pores and let the nutrients penetrate into deeper layers.

Other ingredients used in hair masks such as olive oil, eggs, yogurt or honey will nourish and strengthen your locks, making hair grow thicker, stronger and look healthier. You can vary hair mask mixture with different natural additives depending on which problem you wish to solve.

Is Mustard Good for your Hair?

Mustard seeds contain 16,5—38,5 % of fatty oil and about 0,2—1 % of essential oil, protein, mineral compounds (up to 10 %) and mirosin enzyme. Oil embraces erucic, oleic, linoleic, palmitic, arachidonic and linoleic acids.

Let’s check how some mustard powder elements affect the skin and hair.

  • Vitamin A – a great natural healer for damaged, split, brittle, thinning hair. It has regenerative and restorative properties. Also helps promote the development of cells in the collagen and elastin fibers, which are responsible for the elasticity of strands.
  • Vitamins of B complex – possess moisturizing effect, help control the production of the sebaceous glands. Make hair shiny and less greasy.
  • Vitamin E – known for its antioxidant properties. Treats seborrhea, prevents hair loss, actively protects against external aggression.
  • Vitamin D – useful for damaged tissues, as well as restores them.
  • Essential oils soothe irritated scalp. Natural seborrhea treatment.
  • Fatty acids – good for dry hair, as they moisturize and effectively restore fragile, very thin and weak strands.

But the main “ingredient” of mustard – allyl isothiocyanate (AITC). This compound binds to ion channel (TRPV1 and TRPA1) located on the plasma membrane of many human cells like keratinocytes and cells in hair follicles. Such interaction generates a lot of pain, and the heat sensation as well. Ion channels excitation lead to mediating peripheral widening of blood vessels and increasing dermal blood flow. This is why mustard can help in improving hair growth.

Antimicrobial effects of mustard flour was proved against three bacteria species, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes [1].

Isothiocyanate were tested against a range of fungi, such as penicillium roqueforti, penicillium commune, Asprgillus flavus and Endomyces fibuligra. Mustard essential oil in a concentration of 1 µl, proved to have the strongest effect to completely inhibit the growth of all the microorganism at 25 C.

Making Mustard Hair Mask: Tips to Follow

First of all, prepare the hair mask using only dry mustard powder. This product is available at any supermarket. But the best variant will be making the powder using mustard seeds at home.

In mustard seeds, the AITC isn’t produced until the seeds are broken and an enzyme is released that converts one compound into AITC. This is why stone ground mustards with larger chunks of seeds or commercial powder are less effective than mustard powder prepared by yourself.

Another thing to note, that you can not use liquid or paste mustard from the supermarkets as well. Such product contains artificial additives. Among them are acetic acid, dye, sweeteners, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate which harm the hair. You can only use natural mustard powder and only the freshest one. That’s why always look for mustard with expiration dates over six months from the day you buy the product to ensure you’re getting the hottest, most useful mustard. Powder of high quality can guarantee to get positive results in hair treatment.

When all needed components are ready, it’s time to make the mixture. The temperature of the water can also affect heat level. Hot water will deactivate mustard enzymes and break down some of the pungent compounds while cold water will keep them all intact. So try to dilute mustard powder with warm water (temperature shouldn’t be above 40 C).

Do mustard hair treatments with caution! Applying mask in a hurry or neglecting certain rules may lead to worse hair condition and even light scalp burns.

  • You can control the consistency of this mask by adding more or less water. But don’t make it too runny.
  • You can vary some ingredients to prepare mask depending on how much product you need. Make sure not to neglect any of the components listed above, as they are there for a reason.
  • Don’t add much oil into the mixture. You will have some problems in removing oily residue from your hair.
  • It is not obligatory to add some sugar to mustard mixture. Sugar helps enhance burning effect when the mask is on the scalp. If mustard doesn’t burn add more sugar. The sugar is what makes it burn and the more the burn the better the hair grows. But don’t overdo it! just gradually add sugar to mustard mixture and if it gets really uncomfortable wash it off.
  • If you don’t want to put sugar in the homemade mask, then substitute it with raw honey. In this case, you have to correct the proportion of ingredients depending on which honey you choose. If it is too runny, then you can avoid using water to dilute mustard powder.

If everything fine, let’s get down to actual using of mask.

  • Use the mask not later than 10 days after preparing it. Since hair blend doesn’t contain any preservatives and all natural, you cannot store it. Even if you place the resulting mask into the fridge, it will still gradually lose “heating” properties over time and become useless.
  • Test the resulting mixture on inner elbow. If you feel strong irritation or burning sensation, it means you have to use less mustard powder or to refuse using it at all.
  • Apply mustard mask on scalp avoiding hair length. Massage it with fingertips but don’t rub in. Otherwise burning effect will be unbearable and you’ll rush to shower in 2 minutes after application.
  • For dry and damaged hair it is better to add extra components with moisturizing properties (oils, egg yolk, sour cream, milk or yogurt). If you have very weak, or damaged hair then don’t leave the mustard blend for very long.
  • Before mustard application spread oil on hair tips for protection. Remember that mustard has certain drying effect on hair.
  • Use mustard mask on scalp avoiding the hair length. After that put a shower cap on and cover head with towel for better results.
  • If after leaving mustard on scalp you don’t feel slight burning sensation, then pay attention to a date of mustard powder production. It is more likely the powder is already expired. Sometimes, the absence of “heat” on head can be explained by low sensitivity of scalp. In such case it is better to add sugar to the mustard mixture.
  • Keep the mask on for 30 minutes. It is also possible to prolong time up to one hour. If you suffer burning sensation, wash off the mask immediately.
  • Better wash off the mustard blend with warm water (room temperature). Avoid rinsing head with hot water. Otherwise you can get skin burn. Apply the conditioner on hair if necessary.
  • Mustard masks can be effective if applied regularly. Treatment should include 10 procedures. For dry hair – once in two weeks, for oily hair – once in five days, for normal hair – once a week.
  • While washing it off don’t stand under the shower. To remove mustard from you hair you just need only tilt your head under the tap. In such a way you will prevent mustard come to your face and irritate eyes. Rinse your hair carefully, without using shampoo and try not touch face.
  • After doing this mask wash and condition your hair as usual and let it dry naturally. Or you may avoid using a shampoo. Mustard is a perfect cleanser even for oily hair. After regular use (within 3 weeks) you should notice great results: improvement in hair thickness as well as accelerated hair growth.

Be careful as the ingredients containing in the mask may cause allergic reaction. To avoid unpleasant results better test it on inner side of elbow. Never use this mask on sensitive or inflamed skin. To mitigate the burning effect of mustard powder, it is necessary to add more olive oil.

Mustard mask shouldn’t be used in the following cases:

  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Ulcers and wounds on scalp
  • Sensitive scalp prone to appearance of dandruff

The mustard mask is effective! After regular application, I noticed good changes in hair. They grow 4 cm per month! That’s incredible! But to have such results, the hair mask should be done in a right way. First, I spread burdock oil on hair length to prevent overdrying. If you don’t have burdock oil you can use castor instead. I make the mask in the following way: 2 tablespoons of mustard + 2 tablespoons of warm water + 2 teaspoons of sugar + 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Apply the resulting mixture on the scalp and leave it on for one hour. Wash off with shampoo. Then I prepare another blend to soothe the scalp. I stir olive oil with few drops of vitamins A and E in liquid form. Let this mask sit on scalp for another hour. The wash with shampoo again. Repeat the procedure twice a week. I feel satisfied with results!

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsViv70
I like to apply the mustard mask on hair regularly. For better results I do it twice a week. To be honest, I noticed my hair grow faster after third application. I have blonde thin hair with split ends. Seems to me, mustard improved their condition. My recipe is the following: 2 tablespoons of mustard powder + 1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon of sugar + 2 tablespoons of warm water. I apply the mustard blend on unwashed hair. Don’t forget to rub olive oil into hair length. Leave the mask on for one hour and then wash with lukewarm water.

I decided to make mustard mask for the first time. I had very strong burning sensation after application. I even couldn’t leave the mask on for one hour, rushed into shower immediately. Even after washing the mask off, I still had that burning feeling on the scalp. But the result was nice! I definitely plan to repeat the procedure regularly! My hair was so smooth and shiny after first application.

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsSatori
I used to have hair in the worst condition. Those split ends irritated me very much until I decided to have a shorter haircut. Since that time I applied different masks with mustard powder. Usually, I rinse my hair with herbal infusion after washing off the mustard blend. Now I have hair of my dream! So lustrous and heavy! Believe me or not, they grow 5 cm per month!

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsSara Kejvalova
I’ve tried mustard mask several times. Even after one month, I didn’t see any changes in hair. I could say, my hair became worse, too puffy and over dried completely! Seems, mustard treatment is not suitable for my hair type.

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsJulia Oliveira
I use mustard hair mask for 3 months already. While washing hair, add 1 teaspoon of this natural product into commercial conditioner. I have oily hair and had to wash them almost every day. But since I started mustard treatment, I found out that my hair is less greasy and dirty. Moreover, they became more manageable, look voluminous and shiny! In comparison with onion hair mask, I can say honestly that mustard for hair is much better. It doesn’t leave any strange odor in hair.

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsNicole
Yesterday was the first time I tried mustard hair mask and I wanted to share my experience with it. The first thing I want to say is that I liked it! Though it felt so burning on my scalp, I ended up leaving it on for 45 minutes instead of 20. I washed my hair with an organic shampoo, my hair feels soft but is a little frizzy. For the mask itself, I didn’t have any oil. I just mixed together about 2 tablespoons of mustard powder with 2 tablespoons of hot water and 1 egg yolk. I applied it only to my scalp. I know I will be doing this procedure again and I am looking forward to seeing if this actually does help my hair grow.

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsBrenda
I want to say how I feel about the mustard mask. Well, it is really working! I’ve completed three treatments so far and can see a noticeable difference in the length of my hair! To be honest, I was skeptical at the first time so I’ve been taking pictures each week to show myself the growth. It works! My hair became much longer than before. I’ve been suggesting it to all my friends that want to have healthy hair!

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsAnne-Lise M.
So the first time I used this mask I kept it on for a very short time. Then I decided to prolong the duration. I have been doing the mustard mask 2 times a week for about 2 weeks since my first treatment. I’ve been keeping it on my scalp for the whole hour. I didn’t have any results since my first treatment. I think, it is just waste of time!

Mustard for Hair Growth ReviewsSjuul Willemstein
I tried mustard mask about four months ago when my hair was short. Now it is 3.5 inches longer and a bit thicker too. I have naturally dark blonde hair but I’ve dyed it platinum. After using the mustard my hair got a slight yellow tint for about 2 days but it washed it away with shampoo. Mustard mask tinged a bit the first few times but so far no burning. I’ve stopped using it every week and now do it once a month. My hair is still growing like crazy!

  1. Will this work on bleached damaged hair I stopped the breaking I had my hair is super short it’s so depressing my hair was finally growing not I have to start all over again not only that it took years for my hair to pass my shoulders I’m so sad

    • Anna

This is really sad. It will need time and patience to grow longer and healthier hair but you can fasten that process with natural treatment. If you kept bleaching hair regularly before, then logically you might have sensitive scalp and weakened hair. So, in your situation mustard hair masks will be quite aggressive. Moreover, if mustard powder gets onto your already bleached hair, it will add yellowish tint. I’d rather recommend you to use garlic or onion hair mask. They may leave unpleasant odor in hair but the result is really awesome. I would never advice these homemade masks recipes to anyone if I’ve never tried them myself and noticed the effect. For example, using garlic hair masks twice a week was enough for me to see new hair regrowth after one month already! So, choose the most suitable recipe for your hair and keep preparing it regularly. Good luck!

  2. Thank u but I don’t have it blonde it was a grey ombré but I got rid of it did it black bleach is the devil I hate it lol I do onion treatment juice treatments I just hate the smell all week long

    • Anna

If you are bothered with onion smell in your hair, then add essential oils to the mixture and rinse hair with herbal infusion (for dark hair nettle and rosemary will be the best choice. This trick may help reduce that smell. But if you still hate it, I advice you to try Cayenne pepper or Garlic Mask. I want to note that garlic leaves odor in hair as well but in comparison with onion it is less strong and can be easily removed. Cayenne pepper is also working great but it has quite strong stimulating effect on hair follicles and cannot be used very often. Keep in mind that all masks mentioned above are applied on the scalp, not hair. You said you bleached and dyed hair so I can guess you have split ends and dry hair. To improve hair structure, to make it smooth and soft, use Gelatin Mask. As base treatment you can use gelatin on hair length and one of the listed masks above on the scalp. You can apply them at the same time or interchange them. I hope it will help you! Anyway, feel free to share the results with me, I will be glad to know how everything is working.

  3. Hi Anna, I fall asleep with the mask on my head (yes. I know. very silly, but it happened)
    Any recommendations for the afterburns?
When I took a shower to rinse it, I lost a loooooot of hair. I feel it’s silky but thinner.
My scalp feels fresh still, but a bit itchy, and very sensitive.I haven’t washed my hair ever since (2 days ago) and it doesn’t feel grease or dirty at all! and I am not planing to do so. (because it hurts) but I was wondering if you have any recommendations for the burns.

    • Anna

Hi, Rose! That’s the bad experience, I feel so sorry for you! Mustard powder is quite aggressive on the scalp if you keep it on for too long. Anyway, now you have very sensitive scalp which gives you a feeling like you got burns. First of all, don’t use any mask on the scalp until you get fine. Second, apply for home remedies: you can prepare herbal rinse and use it every time you wash your hair. Burns caused by mustard applications are a common thing. Just in case: this is a chemical burn, not thermal. Secondly, such burns can have two types of severity.
Prolonged mustard exposure causes deep lesion of skin. The skin becomes maroon-brown in color. Epidermis starts peeling. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Further treatment of these lesions is carried out in a hospital environment. If burns are not serious: 1. Wash the damaged area with cool water; 2. Dry skin or gently soak with cloth; 3. Use liquid antiseptic. Also, you can try regenerative medicine. But at this moment avoid using masks or anything else with oils. It’s a bad idea. Remember, it may take more than a week for skin to recover completely.
Be careful, follow the instructions and check your feelings as well. If you feel uncomfortable, stop using the mask. As Anna pointed out, you can prepare a herbal decoction to accelerate the healing process.

  6. Sometime ago I’ve tried mustard on my dry hair and. hm. it’s difficult to say about any positive or negative effect. Anyway I prefer more ‘mild’ masks which contain honey and oil; especially I like mask with gelatin, ‘cuz it makes my curly hair more straight and thicker

  7. Im scared to try this, not because of burning, but because my hair is bleached, dry and naturally frizzy and kinky. My hair has more less been the same length for years and wont grow. I want it to grow longer but am afraid it is too weak for any mask. My roots are strong but my length isnt. If i put the mask just on the roots and totally avoid the rest, will it have the same outcome?
